In Kabale—-
Kabale Municipality Mayor Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha has given a 15-day ultimatum to motor vehicle and motorcycle mechanics in Central Division to vacate Garage Street.
These have been told to relocate to the former Municipal Cemetery in Mwanjari, in Southern Division or face forceful eviction.
Byamugisha while addressing to the media at the new garage place located in Mwanjari noted that all the mechanics should vacate the garage street by 1st may.
He added that Garage Street has been gazetted and will be transformed into a business hub as Kabale prepares to attain city status.
According to the mayor, the mechanics operating on the street have been asked to leave since 2019 but they have remained adamant.
Kabale municipality is set to become a city in 2023, and authorities have been revamping different parts and demarcating others into zonal business places.
At the former cemetery, Byamugisha says the mechanics have been allocated lockups and parking.
Some of the mechanics have welcomed the move.
One of them Ambrose Akanyijuka, says they are okay with the place provided there is security in the place.
He adds that those who have never attended the meetings with the municipal authorities are the ones opposing the move.
Jimmy Kieta, the garage street chairman says the new place is big enough compared to where they have been working and that authorities have assured them of adequate security.
