KABALE MUNICIPALITY DRESSES STATUE DESCRIBED AS ‘INDECENT’ BY RESIDENTS

Authorities in Kabale Municipality have moved in and clothed a statue along the town’s main street after locals deemed it indecent.

The statue of a naked female carrying a hoe and pulling a goat was put up in mid-June as part of the town’s beautification program.

However, the move generated a public outcry in Kabale town and social media platforms with the locals condemning the authorities of abandoning cultural values.

A group of youth led by Alliance for National transformation mobilizer Nicholas Byonanebye bought pieces of cloth and covered the part of the statue in protest of its design at the end of June.

According to Byonanebye, the statue had been put in place without putting into consideration the cultural values of the people in the Kigezi sub region who do not believe in indecency.

The authorities have now moved in and redesigned the statue. The new design is now of a dressed lady putting on a head scuff pulling a goat.

Kabale municipal mayor said that the authorities never planned to leave the statue naked but had given it time to first set before proceeding with more works on it.
