Kabale municipality Member of Parliament Andrew Baryayanga has assured his constituents that they will not be evicted from their wetlands without compensation.
A Section of residents in Kabale District have opposed the government decision of evicting them from Kigezi Wetlands.
The farmers said they are left with no option but to sue the government if officials from the Ministry of Water and Environment evict them without compensation.
The operation, which was conducted by the Ministry of Water and Environment in partnership with Environment Protection Police Unit (EPPU), left the farmers crying.
Addressing the media in Kabala district on Thursday Baryayanga said that the wetlands already used by local people will not be taken by the government unless compensation is given to them.
However, he noted that the wetlands which have never been used since their existence are the ones to be taken cautioning people to avoid encroaching on fresh wetlands because they belong to the government.
Baryayanga also calmed municipality residents that as leaders they are working tirelessly with top government officials to make sure that they are not affected by this government program.
