In Kabale—
Kabale district kindergarten teachers under their umbrella “Kabale district Association early childhood workers” have today stormed Kabale district headquarters protesting the refusal by the government to re-open kindergarten schools.
Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni last week said that there will be no more Nursery / Kindergarten school until the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
The minister who is also the country’s first lady said that children will now have to start school in Primary One at least 5 years of age.
The education minister also noted that Kindergartens or Pre-primary schools will not be re-opened because pupils in this age bracket do not wear masks, adding that, “they are day schools with a lot of interactions between schools.
But today kindergarten workers have expressed their desertification saying they don’t have any source of income since schools were closed.
Immaculate Nuwankunda the director Tendo kindergarten school in Nyabikoni ward, central division Kabale municipality said they had acquired loans before the pandemic and they are now accumulating yet they don’t have money to pay for the earlier.
She added that her school has over 60 workers who were left jobless since the lockdown started and up to now they don’t have any source of income.
She appealed to the minister of education and the government at large to reopen kindergarten schools and to also be considered as Ugandans.
Joventa Kyarikunda one of the oppressed said kindergarten is the basement of the education system so the government should also consider them.
SP Brian Ampeire the Kabale district police commander said this is a national issue so they would have followed the right procedures.
He added that they would have informed the police of their processions which are under “public order management 2006” but gave them hope that they should wait for the situation to normalize.
