The Kabale Resident District Commissioner Darius Nandinda is again on spot for meddling into Youths Elections.
On Monday, the Electoral Commission held elections for District Youths Executive Committees country wide.
Voting was done by the youth’s Electoral College from Sub county, Town council and Municipality levels. The 51 eligible voters were choosing a Committee made up of 9 members.
However, Nandinda is accused of intimidating Brenda Kiconco an independent candidate who was elected as the Secretary for Finance in the Kabale District Youths Executive Council.
Brenda was declared as the only non NRM Member of the Kabale District Youths Council after she defeated NRM’s Shine Arinaitwe and FDC’S Nicholas Asiimwe. Brenda garnered 22 votes while Shine and Nicholas polled 16 and 8 respectively. 5 people abstained from voting.
While addressing the press after being declared the winner, Brenda said she had faced intimidation from Nandinda who reportedly wanted NRM to have a 100% representation in the Youths Council.
“I received phone calls from the RDC threatening to block my declaration in case I win the election,” Brenda was quoted.
Brenda said she spent many days encouraging her electorate not to give in to the RDC’s threats. She also applauded the Kabale District Electoral Office for remaining neutral amidst the “storm”.
It was futile for our reporter to get a comment form the RDC since he told him that he is busy.
It is not the first time Mr. Nandinda is being accused of interfering with youths elections in the District. On 16th Sept. 2020, One Charlote Kemigisha accused him of intimidating her supporters after she lost the female Youths affairs seat for Northern Division Kabale Municipality.
A few days later, FDC youth leaders also accused Nandinda of intimidating their voters during election of the Kabale Municipality Youths Executive Council. The NRM won all the electoral positions in the election that was held 0n 30thsept. 2020.
However, the Kabale District NRM Secretary for Publicity Edison Turyahabwa dismissed claims that the RDC was directly involved in youth’s elections.
Mr. Edison said the NRM’s victory was out of hard work in mobilization. He said Nandinda’s presence with his body guards and heavy Police deployment at the polling venues, were for security purposes since the RDC is the head of security in the District.
