In Kabale–
Traders in garage street market alias Owino in central division of Kabale
municipality are protesting delays to redevelop the market.
In 2016, government announced plans to renovate garage street market under Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID).
The Kabale Municipality authorities further registered all traders
operating in the market. The authorities also announced that they had
secured the market designs and the works were to start in April this year.
However, since the redevelopment plan was announced the work has not kicked off.
Traders who include Benon Byamukama, Emily Natukunda, Amos Tumukunde, and Shira Tushabe among others say they operate under deplorable conditions.
Currently, the traders display their merchandise in the dilapidated stalls,
which is affected by dust.
They say that the situation worsens when the rain season sets in. The traders claim that the stalls roofs are leak whenever it rains. They
also want the authorities to pronounce themselves on when the works on the market will commence.
The Kabale Municipality mayor Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha confirms that the works have stalled. He says that the works were supposed to kick off in April but they realized they had only 1billion shillings yet the works
needed 4.5billion shillings.
Sentaro further says that he has notified the office of prime minister that
promised that the market will be considered in 2018/2019 financial year.
