KABALE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ON STRIKE, HOLD HOSTAGE DVC
Business was paralyzed at Kabale University after over 200 government
sponsored students at the University held a peaceful demonstration in
the university accusing University of failing to remit to them their
Living out allowance.
The students holding placards stormed the university block demanding
to meet the Prof. Joy Constance Kwesiga the Vice Chancellor but she
was not around as they found the deputy Vice chancellor in charge of
administration Prof. Ezra Twesigomwe Mishambi who tried to convince
them but all fell on deaf ears it was then that he ran to his office
where they also followed him and sat down on the floor demanding that
unless their issues are solved they are not going to leave the office
that was when he had to flee using another door.
Led by one Julius Tumuhimbise they say that government sponsored
students are suppose to get 840,000= as living out allowance but
they are given 420,000= as well others haven’t received the money as
well they accuse the university of also asking them to pay 100,000= as
development fund when they are government sponsored students they are
not supposed to pay any money as well the 200,000= which is faculty
fee is little.
He says that first years reported on the 12th August 2017 while
continuing students on the 19th August 2017 but they haven’t got any
money as there landlords are chasing them away from the houses they
rent as well they are starving as they don’t have what to eat.
“They asked us to submit in our accounts but we haven’t received any
money from now as we are starving well as the landlords are chasing us
from their houses”. Said Tumuhimbise.
Judith Atukunda the Kabale University Public Relations Officer-PRO
says that in public institutions government releases money in quarters
as now they had just received the first quarter as the semester goes
for five months.
