KABALE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS STRIKE OVER SACKING OF HUMAN RIGHTS CLUB PATRON

Police has today foiled a demonstration of students at Kabale University in Kabale district accusing the university administration of sacking the patron of Kabale University Human Rights Club, Dr. Joseph Tindyebwa.
Tindyebwa, also a lecture at the university was sacked in 2017, after he petitioned Inspector General of Government (IGG), to investigate the alleged mismanagement of the contract transfers at the University as it transits from private to public.
Tindyebwa’s petition asked the IGG to investigate alleged gross discrimination exhibited by the University administration where by some staffs have been put on the government pay roll while others were excluded.
Students claimed that the reasons for Tindyebwa’s sacking were unfair. They also said that following Tindyebwa’s sacking, the university has failed to replace him with another patron.
The students led by the President of Kabale University Human Rights Club Ritah Ainembabazi, accused the university administration of failure to explain the circumstances to the students why Tindyebwa was sacked.
Shortly after addresing the press at Kikungiri Church of Uganda hall, the students matched to the university premises while carrying placards and petiton but were intercepted by police under the command of George William Okello, the Officer-in-Charge of Kabale University Police Post from submitting their petition to the office of the University Secretary and the Guild President.
Okello claimed that there is no way police could allow procession up to the office of the university secretary and to the office of the guild president because they had no clearance from the office of the Inspector General of Police.
Kabale University Communications Officer Judith Atukunda, declined to comment on Dr. Joseph Tindyebwa’s sacking saying that the matter is still in courts of law. She also declined to comment on other issues raised by the student
