In Masindi—
Masindi Grade 1 Irene Aber has declined to grant bail to the three students of Kabalega secondary school who were caught stealing desks and other school properties.
Laston Bamugonze, Derrick Musiime and Earnest Tuhaise all senior four students were arrested one month back after they were caught selling the schools metallic desks valued in millions of shillings to scrap material dealers in Kijura south cell in central division, Masindi municipality, Masindi district.
The students were arrested along with Guti Jaliru and AbudulWasswa, both scrap material dealers in Kijura cell who had reportedly bought the desks from them.
Guti Jalirua scrap dealer who had been given bail was also re- arrested after he failed to cooperate with court. The students were denied bail due to the absence of the state attorney Atherton Kukundakwe.
The students were further remanded until 19th September 2019 when they will appear in court again. This is the fourth time the trio is being remanded.
Appearing before the magistrate on Tuesday this week, Andrew Tumwesige, the head teacher, Kabalega secondary school explained that students stole 70 metallic desks from the school which were donated by African Development Bank (ADB)
The magistrate advised the parents to ensure that they sit with the school management and ensure that the desks are repaired noting that the offense their children committed attracts a punishment of 10 years in prison something she said can spoil the childrens future. She had instructed them by Thursday of this week to have reached a consensus.
Speaking to www.mknewslink.com yesterday at court premises, Ronald Murungi the schools lawyer noted that the meeting which sat between the school management, scrap dealers and the parents didnt yield any fruit explaining that the scrap dealers want only to repair the fence and also pay one million which the school management and the parents disagreed with.
According to Murungi, they are going to sit again within two weeks until they reach a consensus.
