The speaker of parliament Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, on Monday 11th June 2018 blamed the finance minister, Matia Kasaija and the Prime Minister Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda, on the delayed establishment of Bunyoro University.
Addressing Bunyoro Kingdom’s subjects who had turned up for the 24th Empango celebrations at Karuzika palace in Hoima town on Monday, Kadaga noted that as parliament they did their role saying that in June 2016 they passed a resolution to establish universities like Kabale university, Soroti University and Lira university adding that Bunyoro university was to be the next to be established in 2017/18.
She added that she is wandering to see people from Bunyoro still asking for the university and yet everything was resolved in parliament. She instructed the prime minister and the minister for finance to ensure that they establish Bunyro University with immediate effect noting that they have no excuse since they are already late.
All this came about after the chairperson LCV Hoima district Kadiri Kirungi, explained that people from Bunyoro Kingdom have remained to do only casual work because they have not attained good education.
He added that people from Bunyoro don’t need to request for the university but to demand for it saying that most of the universities are at distant making it hard for the people of Bunyoro to access them. He also explained that Bunyoro region is like a neglected area noting other regions have universities but for them they are just spectators.
Andrew Byakutaga, the Prime Minister Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, said that they met the president and accepted to grant a university hence calling upon the speaker of parliament to do what is necessary to help the Banyoro get it.
Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, the prime minister of Uganda assured that Banyoro that the university is going to start adding that government has already began the process. He added that government decided to put the centre of the university at Kigumba in Kiryandongo district. He therefore called upon the people of Bunyoro to work hand in hand with the government to ensure that the process materializes.
