Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MoSTI) Dr Elioda Tumwesigye , PS David Obong and other senior staff on Friday 13th March 2020 hosted Rebecca Alitwara Kadaga the Speaker of Parliament at the Motor Vehicle Assembly Plant of Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC).
Kadaga had also moved with Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation led by the Chairperson Hon Major (Rtd) Fred Bwino Kyakulaga.
Kiira Motor Corporation is one of MoSTI Agencies headed by the Executive Chairman Prof Tokodri Togboa and CEO Eng Paul Musasizi.
The Assembly Plant is being constructed in the Jinja Industrial Park by the UPDF owned National Enterprises Corporation (NEC) and Assembly Plant is scheduled to be ready by June 2021.
The Rt Hon Speaker was driven in the first Ugandan designed and built Electric Bus known as Kayoola Bus from Jinja Bridge to the Assembly Plant near Mutai in Kakira Town Council, Jinja district over 20 Kilometers away.
The plant when completed will have capacity to make over 5000 buses a year. Later the plant will manufacture pick-ups, SUVs and Sedans. Currently Importation of motorvehicles is the 2nd highest valued call on our hard earned forex import bill at about 450M USD. The first being Petroleum Products.
According to Minister Elioda, the firm shall be able to manufacture most vehicle parts from Uganda ranging from Glass from sand, Chasis and body from Iron and Steel, carpet from bamboo, battery from lithium, cobalt etc, Chairs and other parts from plastic itself out of oil, upholestry from leather, silk etc.
He encouraged Ugandans to start planning to supply some of these components thus creating jobs and wealth.
