Residents of Katikara Sub County in Kakumiro district have been engulfed in shock after unidentified Machete-wielders invaded a church and hacked a 27-year-old man to death and another into critical condition.
The deceased, identified as Rayasi Mugume, 27, is a teacher at Bennitah High School in Katikara and a resident of Bugambe in Hoima district.
The deceased met his demise at around mid-night while in prayers with a group of over seven people who were in prayers at Katikara COU parish when a group of Machete wielders entered the church with sharp panga and started hacking people.
It’s alleged that the other Christians ran away, making an alarm, which attracted Emmanuel Rukundo, a lay leader of the same church, who woke up with the sharp torch light that scared the culprits and fled the scene.
In an interview with this publication, Rukondo noted that upon reaching the church, he found Mugume lying in a pool of blood, whereas his colleague Aggrey Niwagaba was in a critical condition. He rushed him to Dr. Byaruhanga’s Clinic, where he is now nursing his wounds.
He, however, said that they stopped overnight earlier, but people with different problems do come at night to share with God.
Hon. Sunday William, the secretary for community and security in Kakumiro district who is also the director for Benita High School, noted that the community should be security conscious in our homes and our communities, stressing that wrongdoers are still in our communities.
He said that the bars are playing music during the night, which is hindering the security and neighborhood watch in their area.
ASP Edgar Kulaigye, the Kakumiro District Police Commander, said that after the tragedy, they tried to put a checkpoint at all outlets in Katikara, but all was in vain.
Kulaigye is, however, calling upon the residents to work together with the police in case anyone has information in order to bring justice to the grieving family.
Rev. Canon Godfrey Buuro, the archdeacon for Kisiita Archdeaconry, has pledged to put security in place at the main center churches.
Buuro added that the culprits are within, hence calling upon the residents to help the police in investigations.
Meanwhile, the police reached the scene and took the body of the deceased to Kakindo HCIV and later to the relatives for burial.
