The Water Sanitation and Hygiene actors in Kamwenge District have expressed concern over the low latrine coverage especially in urban centers.
According to Statistics, Kamwenge Town council which hosts the district headquarters has the lowest latrine coverage at 22%, while Kabuga Town council has the highest latrine coverage in the district at 44%.
Brenda Achiro the Executive director Water for people says that over 86,000 people in Kamwenge still lack basic sanitation services.
She says that lack of latrines has led to open defecation in most urban centres in the district. This is most common in Nkoma-Katalyebwa Town Council.
The District Chairperson Kamwenge Joseph Karungi says a number of diseases have so far broken out as a result of poor hygiene.
Godfrey Mucunguzi the RDC Kamwenge says they are soon starting up a campaign and whoever is found without a latrine will be arrested without any mercy.
