In Kanungu–
315 teachers in Kanungu have received food relief from their umbrella organization; Uganda National Teachers’ Union UNATU worth 10 million Ugandan shillings, following serious hunger that has stricken the district.
Each teacher has received 10 kilograms of Posho and 5 kilograms of beans in addition to each school receiving 50 kilograms of Posho and 50 kilograms of beans.
The food relief was Wednesday July 5,2017 districted to all teachers in both primary and secondary government aided schools in sub counties of Nyamirama, Nyanga and Kihihi in Kanungu district, supervised and distributed by the UNATU General Secretary James Tweheyo, body’s chairperson Zadock Tumuhimbise supported by the Kanungu district branch Chairperson Florence Ntegyereize.
Tweheyo said that they were forced to secure the relief for the teachers after the government’s reliefs in the area last month, were only targeting the general public without considering the civil servants.
He also encouraged all teachers on government payroll who are not yet members of UNATU to join the union in order to work as a team in achieving the body’s objectives.
Zadock Tumuhimbise, the national Chairperson UNATU warned teachers against vices like alcoholism, being involved in sex acts and encouraged them to always have side investments for the well being of their families and communities.
The Kihihi Sub County LCIII Chairperson, Nelson Natukunda commended UNATU for its concern and consideration to the teachers in the area, revealing that some husbands in some families have started abandoning their families due to the incapability to cater for the hunger situation hitting the area.
