The Kasese Disaster Focal Person, Mr. Joseph Singoma has reiterated his call to the victims of the recent floods and landslides across the district to start thinking of going back to their respective homes.
In May this year, Kasese witnessed above normal rains that caused devastating floods and landslides leading to loss of lives of at least 13 people and destruction of property including houses and crops.
Addressing the press last evening at his office, Mr. Singoma who also doubles as the Kasese District Senior Planner, explained that the temporary camps were established as an emergency response to aid some families that were affected by the calamity have a place of refuge.
According to him, the situation has currently normalized, asking the victims to resort to going back to their homes as the government comes up with appropriate means of catering for them.
He explained that the Disaster Management Committee has already formulated a list of the people who were affected, adding that their teams would be delivering relief items donated to them by the government while residing at their homes.
In a related development, Mr. Singoma stressed that his office has been awash with information that some individuals staying in the camps have selfish interests of getting free land from the government, arguing that the district authorities only allowed the establishment of temporary camps that do not pave with for compensating the occupants.
He subsequently noted that the directive to have the flood victims return to their homes would affect only eight camps that he didn’t mention by name.
