KASESE LANDSLIDE VICTIMS APPEAL FOR RELOCATION

KASESE
People who were recently displaced by landslides in Kasese district have appealed to the government to relocate them to safer places.
A total of 45,000 people are currently encamped at more than 18 temporarily established camps after their houses were permanently and partially destroyed by the May floods and landslides.
Agnes Kabugho, a resident of Kanyatsi village in Kyarumba sub-county says she is now homeless because her house got submerged and eventually collapsed, an act that forced her to move to the camp with her six children.
It is against this background that Kabugho suggests to the central government to come to their rescue and relocate them to disaster free areas within and outside the district.
However, Robert Masereka Kisubi, a resident of Kibathi village in Kyondo sub-county has a different thinking about relocation to another area.
According to him, the government has failed to resettle the people who were displaced in May 2020 and are currently encamped at Muhokya in a deplorable situation. He argues that the process of resettling the current ones might be harder.
But Mr. Johnson Masereka, the Project Coordinator for Kyarumba Banywani Tree Farmers, advises the government to deliberately support people’s focus on conserving the environment.
Masereka says that during their field assessment study, they discovered that the recent disaster indeed wrecked havoc that is likely to cost the government a lot of money in her reconstruction process.
