In Kisoro
Police has heavily deployed in Kisoro town to avert planned demonstrations by a section of residents in Kisoro district over the arrest of former Inspector General of police General Edward Kale Kayihura.
Yesterday, the Former Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura was arrested and detained at Makindye Military Barracks. According to Uganda People’s Defence Forces-UPDF Spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire, Gen Kayihura was airlifted from his farm in Kashagama, Lyantonde District yesterday morning.
He was later taken to meet with the Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi at the army headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala. At Mbuya, Kayihura was interrogated for about seven hours until around 8:00pm when a heavily-guarded military convoy of military trucks escorted him to Makindye.
The Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate said that they residents were being mobilized by the Kisoro district LC5 Chairman Abel Bizimana on social media to gather at Kisoro Mayors Gardens.
He has advised the Kisoro district leadership to use rightful and lawful channels to present their grievousness than taking law into own hands, or else risk being arrested as per public order management Act.
Our efforts to get a comment from Bizimana were futile as he could not pick phone calls.
General Kayihura a resident of Kisoro who served as Inspector General of Police for thirteen years was fired early this year, in a reshuffle which President Museveni has since described as a considered approach to clean the force. The army has remained tight-lipped in the exact cause of his arrest.
