Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura, has been granted bail by the General Court Martial that will sitting in Makindye, Kampala.
Gen. Kayihura who was arrested in June was last week charged with failure to protect war materials contrary to section 122(1) (2) (d) of the UPDF Act 2005.
The chairman of the court, Lt Gen Andrew Gutti, however, restricted him not travel beyond Kampala and Wakiso districts.
Lt Gen Gutti said the court was convinced, as argued by Gen Kayihura’s lawyers, that he is a serving soldier, of advanced age, he presented substantial sureties, and required urgent medical attention.
He’s required to report to the court every Monday of every month. He is not supposed to travel abroad without the permission of court and the army leadership, since he is a serving soldier.
Relatives, supporters and sympathizers are celebrating outside court.
Gen Kayihura is charged with aiding and abetting the kidnapping by commission, repatriating Rwandan exile and refugees and Ugandan citizens to Rwanda between 2012 and 2016.
He was also accused of failing to protect war material by issuing arms to unauthorized persons including Boda Boda 2010 members led by jailed Abdallah Kitatta between 2010 and 2018.
