Locals and leaders in Rukiga and Kabale districts have opposed the Directive of President Yoweri Museveni to the Finance Ministry to immediately buy escort vehicles for all the Members of Parliament, saying its misappropriation of resources.
Yesterday President Museveni directed the Finance Ministry to immediately buy escort vehicles for all the 456 MPs while the army will provide them with “sharp shooters” to protect them from what he called terrorists.
He ordered Finance minister Matia Kasaija to immediately set aside money to acquire a fleet of escort vehicles for MPs which will be boosted by marksmen from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). According to the directive, government will pay cost of about 78.8 billion Shillings.
Alex Tindimwebwa from Bushuro parish in Kitumba Sub County and Godfrey Arinaitwe from Kyanamira Sub County in Kabale district told mknewslink.com that the money to be spent the legislators should be used to buy drugs in health centers to help poor Ugandans.
The Rukiga district male youth Councillor Micheal Kwarikunda Mbareba wonders the felony legislators have committed to the extent of fearing their electorates. He says those wrong laws which have been passed and causing anger among the public should rescinded, for peace to prevail.
The Executive Director of Kick corruption out of Uganda Robert Byamugisha Kakuru says that escort vehicles will not solve insecurity problem of legislators since they leave in communities where they can be targeted from.
The Ndorwa East Legislator Hon Wilfred Niwagaba says that he won’t accept the escort vehicle because he is protected by God. He says that the directive should be condemned by all Ugandans because it’s a gross misuse of tax payer’s money.
