KIRUHURA REV. LANGUISHES IN PRISON OVER CATTLE THEFT CHARGES

A church of Uganda Reverend has completed a full month languishing in police cells at Kiruhura police station on charges of cattle theft.
Reverend Ampurire Richard Rwakishaija attached to Kahanda church of Uganda in Rugusuru sembabule district is accused of multiple cases related to cattle theft.
His wife Winnie Kansiime said that her husband was first arrested on 30th July 2018 after being suspected to have stolen two cows belonging to Karumuna Benon the bursar of Kazo secondary school in Kazo County.
Kansiime asserted that during the arrest, police also impounded cows and goats from the family farm in Katengeto cell, Kijuma parish, Rwemikoma Sub County which were later distributed to different people who claimed that their cows and goats too, were also stolen (Ambience.
The Reverend was arraigned in court and remanded at Rugongyi government prison until 5thSeptember 2018 when the Grade two magistrate her worship Jalia Bassajjabalaba released him on bail.
On 12th December 2018 he was re-arrested and detained at kiruhura police station which action has troubled his family and relatives after their efforts to have him released on bond or taken to court were futile.
The area LCI Chairperson Barwana Moses said that he would have intervened in the matter and secured a police bond for the reverend but he is scared of security minister Gen Elly Tumwine who arrested him also during a security meeting on suspicion that he too is a cattle thief.
Rose Atim the regional human rights officer said that they carrying out investigations to find out why the accused persons liberty is violated and probably compel the people responsible for the violation of his rights to compensate him.
Rwizi Region police spokesperson Kasasira Samson said police could not fast-track the process of having his files sanctioned because more evidence against him is still gathered.
Kasasira who admitted that indeed his rights are being infringed, said that police cannot release him back to the community alleging that the locals are threatening to lynch him.
