KISORO: MAN SENTENCED TO 7 YEARS FOR INJURING POLICE OFFICER

Kisoro grade one magistrate court has today convicted and sentenced a 30-year-old man to seven years in prison for causing grievous harm to police officer contrary to section 219 of the penal code act chapter 120 as amended.
The convict has been identified as Hafasha Benon Pius, a resident of Gasija cell Rubuguri town council Kisoro district.
Kisoro grade one magistrate court presided over by his worship Raphael Vueni heard that on 12th August 2022 while in Gasija cell, Rubuguri ward Rubuguri town council in Kisoro district, the convict Hafasha Benon attacked Sergeant Serugendo Johnson, a police officer attached Rubuguri police station with a panga.
Prosecution told court that on 12th August 2022, PC Niyonzima Carlist, PC Ayinomugisha Apollo and the complainant St Serugendo Johnson, all attached to Rubuguri police station had gone to summon the accused person for the purpose of recording a statement at Rubuguri police station on allegations of trespassing and malicious damage. These police officers were unarmed and in plain clothes.
Court also heard that after the incident, the accused person went and surrendered himself at Rubuguri police station where he was detained.
St Serugendo Johnson was rushed to Rubuguri health centre IV in critical condition with multiple cut wounds. He was later discharged after sometime but continues to receive treatment up to now.
The accused Hafasha Benon on his part admitted to have committed the crime but claimed he didn’t know that St Serugendo Johnson and his colleagues were police officers because they went to his workshop in plain clothes.
He alleged that on reaching inside his workshop, he realized that his money worth 2 million shillings was missing and suspected that it was Sgt. Serugendo who had taken it.
His worship Raphael Vueni convicted and sentenced the accused to seven years in prison. He subtracted two months the convict has been on remand meaning that he will serve a sentence of 6 years and 10 months in prison.
Relatedly, his worship Raphael Vueni convicted and remanded two men from Nyakabande to Kisoro prison over the charges of simple robbery. The convicts were identified as Munyangabe Amos Pius 32 and Ngabirano Revikato 34 all residents of Bubaga village Gisorora parish Nyakabande sub county Kisoro district.
Court heard that on 29th.09. 2016 while in Chapa trading centre in Nyakabande the dual robbed a one Murusasa her airtime cards worth 9.884.000 shillings, a mobile phone and hard cash worth 8 million shillings all totaling to 17.954.000 shillings. His worship Vueni convicted the two and remanded them to Kisoro prison until 27th October 2022 when they will appear in court again for sentencing.
