KISORO POLICE DEPLOYS TO BLOCK CHRISTIANS OPPOSED TO ELECTION OF NEW BISHOP

KISORO DISTRICT
Police in Kisoro district yesterday deployed heavily in mayor’s Garden to stop an anticipated public meeting organized by a section of Christians opposing what they call irregularities and illegalities in the nomination process of the 3rd Bishop of Muhabura diocese.
Kisoro DPC SP Musisi Richard said that the heavy deployment of police officers at Mayor’s Garden in Kisoro municipality come following an information that a group of aggrieved Christians had organized a public meeting in place over nomination process of Muhabura diocesan 3rd Bishop.
SP Musisi said the meeting was illegal and against public order management act because the aggrieved Christians had no clearance letter from inspector general of police Martin Okoth Ochola. He explained that they should sought permission from IGP two weeks before the public meeting
The leader of the aggrieved group, Hashakimana Robert said they adjourned the meeting to a later date on the advice of the district security committee.
He said that the agenda of their meeting was to point out injustices shown in nomination process of Muhabura diocesan 3rd Bishop.
One of the aggrieved Christians who preferred anonymity accused the nomination committee of contravening a law that prohibits disclosing names of nominated people to the public.
She claims that the nomination committee which sat on 9th January 2023 disclosed Rev. Eric Arinaitwe and Rev. Canon Godfrey Mbitse as the people they forwarded to the house of Bishops from where one will be selected as Muhabura diocesan 3rd Bishop.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tereraho John- the diocesan and provincial head of laity said the nomination processes was confidential and wondered how and where the group is getting the names of nominated people. He asked the group of Christians to take their grievances to the leadership of the diocese than holding public meetings in Mayor’s Garden.
Mr. Tereraho John further told Christians that before the end of this week, house of Bishops will have announced the 3rd Bishop of Muhabura diocese.
However, a source from diocese who preferred anonymity told our reporter that house of bishops is sitting today and 3rd Bishop of Muhabura diocese is likely to be announced tomorrow. We couldn’t independently verify these claims
