The Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Robert Tumuhabwa, has issued a stern warning to motorists and car owners who wash their vehicles in the middle of River Mucha, which flows through Nyundo Sub-county and connects to both Lake Mutanda and Lake Mulehe.
Speaking to the media from his office at the Kisoro District Headquarters, Tumuhabwa said that several individuals had already been arrested following complaints from concerned residents who rely on the river for domestic use.
Tumuhabwa explained that residents are increasingly worried about the health risks posed by the contaminated water, which they say is being polluted by oils and dirt from cars and motorcycles washed directly in the river.
He emphasized the importance of keeping the river clean, especially as the area attracts a large number of tourists traveling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to see mountain gorillas. A clean environment, he noted, is critical to both public health and tourism appeal.
The RDC also revealed plans to convene a community meeting involving local residents and environmental officials. The meeting will aim to sensitize the public on the proper use of the river and the dangers of polluting it with motor oil and other vehicle waste.
He reiterated that anyone found washing vehicles in the middle of the river will face arrest and prosecution, urging locals to fetch water responsibly and find alternative locations for washing cars and motorcycles.
