The management of Kitara Model Secondary School in Masindi town, Masindi district has compensated the parent whose daughter was assaulted by Felix Ereso, a teacher at the school.
Patrick Ogwal filed a case against Ereso at Masindi police station on 27th May this year after he assaulted and severely injured his 16 year old daughter who was in senior three class at the school whose name have been withheld.
Police later summoned Ereso to record a statement and he refused prompting them to direct the school management to produce him.
The District Police Commander Samuel Odongo told www.mknewslink.com today that the school management on Thursday last week produced the accused teacher to police where the school management met the parent and gave him 900,000 shillings as a condition to settle the matter amicably.
Odongo explained that the money included the medical bill that the parent paid to treat his daughter for the injuries she sustained from the assault, refund for the school fees he had paid for the daughter, the cost of transport to Masindi plus the damages that he incurred.
The DPC added that the head teacher Praise Gift Orishaba and director Dr David Turyagumanawe also apologized to both the parent and the assaulted student for their teacher’s act.
However Odongo condemned the act of teachers assaulting learners and warned them against subjecting students to corporal punishments that was outlawed by parliament.
When contacted, Ogwal, the parent to the assaulted student confirmed receiving the money from the school adding that he withdrew the case against the teacher but refused to take back his daughter to the school.
We could not get a comment from the school management on the matter but the director and head teacher had earlier denied the reports and disassociated the school from both the student and the accused teacher.
A section of Women leaders and activists in Masindi district last week condemned the teacher’s act and threatened to take action if the matter would not be handled properly.
