LCI CHAIRPERSON, 4 OTHERS ARRESTED OVER CATTLE THEFT IN IBANDA, KAZO DISTRICTS

Five people including a village chairman were on Saturday arrested for allegedly being behind continuous cattle theft in the districts of Ibanda and Kazo.
The arrested are Geoffrey Nuwagaba 52 the LCI chairman of Kakuuto II village in Muziza Parish,Ishogororo sub county ,Gashom Baheebwa 31,a manager at the farm of Kellen Namanya in Mbogo cell,Kazo District, Richard Natukunda 40, Lawrence Tukakira Kombozi a resident of Kakuuto cell and Moses Tumwine 33 resident of Rugazi cell.
Paul Muhinda, the officer in charge of criminal investigations Department Ibanda police station told www.mknewslink.com that the five were apprehended following reports that they were transporting animals and none of them had a document explaining the movements of animals.
“We found them heading to the butcher to slaughter the stolen animals, we suspect these cows were stolen from Kazo district a week ago,” Muhinda revealed.
He said that the five will be charged with cattle rustling as per section 266 of the penal code Act adding that once they are convicted, they are liable to imprisonment for life.
Muhinda said that they are currently challenged by people who slaughter animals and transport meat in milk cans from Kazo to Ibanda which is against the foot and mouth quarantine.
Aggrey Muhenda Chairperson LC3 Kagongo subcounty told www.mknewslink.com reporter that they lost two cows and 10 goats in one night despite the animal quarantine imposed on the district.
In February the ministry of Agriculture issued a ban on the movement of cattle in most districts of Ankole including Mbarara, Kiruhura, Kazo, Ibanda, and Isingiro after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
