The minister for Local Government Jennifer Namuyangu has demanded all the local governments to prioritize on proper Management of Natural Resources and the ecosystem if the country is to achieve the universal access to safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services by 2030.
The Minister was on Thursday presiding over the launch of a 2.3Bn shs Kabarole District WASH Master Plan 2018-2030 at Kitumba district headquarters. The WASH Master Plan was developed in Partnership with International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC).
Hon. Jennifer Namuyangu has decried the rampant deforestation, destruction of wetlands and pollution of water bodies, a vice she said would quickly turn Uganda into water stressed country.
She said that the country is experiencing floods, landslides and drought because of the rampant destruction of wetlands and forests for establishment of the human activities like buildings, farming among others.
The minister cited Mpanga River in Kabarole district which is heavily contaminated by irresponsible disposal of effluent and waste water.
Minister Namuyangu asked the chief administrative officers and district chairpersons to ensure the work of parish chiefs, sub county chiefs and natural resources officers is felt by sensitizing the people against environmental degradation and also arrest the culprits because peoples lives depend on water.
The district Chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga observed that there is a need for the development partners to have a component of sustainable environment protection in their work plans so as to address the rampant degradation.
