LIONS CLUB DONATES 500 LIFE JACKETS TO BUNYONYI ISLAND SCHOOLS

The Lions club of Kabale alongside that of Kampala Central yesterday afternoon donated 500 lifesaving jackets to five schools located on the islands of Lake Bunyonyi in Kitumba Sub County, Kabale and Rubanda districts as one of the measures to reduce on lake accidents.
According to Can. Lydia Ibingira, Lion’s president of Kampala Central, the benefiting schools include: Bwaama primary school, Bwama secondary school, Kyabahinga primary school, Bufuka primary school, Little Angels Nursery and primary school. Two women groups that include: Kakooko women’s group and Kitooma Women’s group.
Ibingira said that each school got 100 life jackets. The groups also got 100 life jackets each. She says that each life jacket was bought at shillings 60,000.
Ezra Suruma, Makerere University Chancellor, one of the Lions members told our reporter while at Bwaama island primary school that as Lions club, they got concerned following various accidents in which people would drown and die sailing without life jackets.
Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha, Kabale Municipality mayor who represented Darius Nandinda, Kabale Resident District Commissioner lauded Lions club for the good cause towards reducing accidents on lake Bunyonyi.
In October 2020, Amon Turyatemba, a student of Nyabikoni secondary school drowned in Lake Bunyonyi while on tour. In August 2020, five people all residents of Karambo village in Muko sub county of Rubanda district drowned in the same lake and died.
On August 11th, 2020, three people including John Bosco Tumuheki, Felix Arineitwe and Firicano Turyahikayo, all residents of Katetenkora village in Nyamiryango Parish, Butanda Sub County in Kabale district drowned after their canoe capsized in the same lake.
In June 2020, two people from Muko sub-county in Rubanda district drowned in the same lake while travelling in a canoe.
This is not the first donation to some of the schools at the Lake. In December 2018, Uganda Police Force donated 150 life jackets to Kyabahinga, Bufuka and Kifuka primary schools.
