The territorial police in Kanungu are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man suffering from mental illness, who was found in a pool of blood in Kanungu Town Council.
The deceased has been identified as Bernard Turyamureba, 37, a resident of Bukora Cell, Northern Ward, Kanungu Town Council, Kanungu District. His body was discovered in a pool of blood.
According to a police statement, it is alleged that on Friday, 20th September 2024, at around 9:00 p.m., Turyamureba began speaking incoherently, prompting his family to administer some medication to calm him down, as they believed his condition was related to ongoing family “demonic issues.” He had been battling mental illness intermittently for some time.
Family members reported that Turyamureba’s illness had led to the separation from his wife, leaving their 12-year-old child in the care of Turyamureba’s father.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He stated that at around 3:00 p.m. the same day, the deceased’s parents had served him food in his house. However, when they returned to collect the plates after a rainfall, they found him groaning in a pool of blood with a deep cut on his neck. A blood-stained panga was found placed between his legs.
The deceased’s parents immediately alerted neighbors, who in turn notified the police. Officers from Kanungu Police Station responded swiftly to the scene.
The crime scene was documented, and relevant witness statements were recorded. The body was examined at Kanungu Health Center IV, and the panga was recovered as evidence. The body was later handed over to the relatives for a proper burial.
The case, suspected to be a suicide, was registered at Kanungu Police Station under reference number DEF/04/2024.
