The Minister for Local government Raphael Magyezi has threatened to terminate the contract of a company contracted to construct Mbarara central market if they fail to finish construction works by May this year.
The 21 billion shillings project was contracted by ROKO Construction Company Limited under the Market and Agriculture Trade Improvement Project (MATIP) that aims at improving agriculture and trade.
The ROKO Construction Company Limited which started the construction in 2018 was expected to have completed by Feb.2020.
However, Magyezi who was yesterday 05th.March.2021 officiating at giving out of Local council stamps at Kamukuzi Mbarara district noted that since Feb.20220, market has suffered three setbacks.
The minister added that as a ministry, they have already notified the Contractors to hand over the market to the vendors by May 2021 or else they will have their contract terminated.
Eng. Willie Swanapoel the contract operation manager ROKO Construction Company Limited attributed the delays to the central government which has been slow in releasing funds.
Magyezi however, refuted the claim adding that the government is ready to pay the contractor once the project is complete.
The secretary for publicity Mbarara Central Market Vendors Association Donozio Kibanda said that continuous delay in completion of the market is a night mare to the traders who currently temporarily work from the city Independence Park.
