By Wilber Muhwezi Kasibante
In Bushenyi—
The Minister of innovations, science and Technology;Dr.Elioda Tumwesigye as opposed the move to open Makerere University Study centre at Katungu in Bushenyi town.
Makerere University council has already agreed with West Ankole Diocese to open a study centre at Katungu mothers Union in Bushenyi town in a bid to extend services nearer to the people.
However, in an exclusive interview with the www.mknewslink.com managing editor yesterday,Dr.Tumwesigye said that Ankole Western University can bring one of it’s faculties to Katungu instead of Makerere university study centre.
During the synod meeting at Bweranyangi last Friday, Bishop Johnson Twinomujuni disclosed Makerere University will be paying rent for the buildings at Katungu Mothers Union thus an income to the diocese.
He said that diocese will take 40% of the rental fees collected from the Katungu centre whereas Ankole Western University and Mothers Union will take 30% each.
Stakeholders of West Ankole diocese including Elly Kekuruso,Paul Tusubira, Pison Mugizi,Rev.Reuben Mugarura and Deo Atuhaire who support the move say the Makerere University study centre will start in August this year.
However, Sam Kahindi, Yowas Makaaru and Can.David Kabigumira say they will not allow the Makerere Universty study centre to open at Katungu.
Emeritus Bishop Yona Mwesigwa Katoneene during his tenure as the West Ankole dicesan Bishop tried to open Ankole Western University study centre at Katungu Mothers Union but met stiff resistance from Sheema stakeholders.
The Sheema stakeholders saw the move as a plan to open a parallel University that would compete with Ankole Western University.
