Democratic Party (DP) president general Nobert Mao has blasted Supreme Court, accusing them of siding with ruling NRM party.
Mr. Mao was speaking after the Supreme Court in Kololo upheld the amendment of the constitution to scrap the lower and upper presidential age limits by parliament.
On Thursday afternoon, a panel of 7 judges of the Supreme Court in a 4:3 judgment held that the majority justices of the Constitutional Court never erred when they ruled that the entire process of conceptualizing, debating and enactment of Constitution (Amendment) Act 2018 that removed the presidential age limit from the Constitution did not contravene the 1995 Constitution and Rules of Procedure of Parliament
The Supreme Court also held that Justices of the Constitutional Court never erred when they ruled that the removal of the age limit for the President was not inconsistent with the Constitution.
The decision of the constitutional court is upheld and this appeal fails, said Justice Eldad Mwangusya who read the final verdict on behalf of the Chief Justice Bart Katureebe who claimed he was unwell.
Mr. Mao described the occasion as a sad day for the country saying that Ugandans who had hopes in this court are disappointed.
We respect the judgment but consider it illegitimate, Mr. Mao said shortly after final ruling.
He added that, You cant torture legislators and at the end of the day you say the outcome was clean.
However, Deputy Attorney General, Mwesigwa Rukutana described it as being a representation of the will of the people.
I congratulate everyone for this triumph. This calls for every Ugandan to celebrate for democracy and rule of law have taken root in our country, Mr. Rukutana said.
