In Rwampara—
Leaders in Mwizi sub county Rwampara district have expressed their concern about escalating numbers of early marriages in the area.
Sunday Godfrey the Mwizi sub county chairperson LCIII says that due to lockdown imposed to contain the spread of corona virus in the country, over 15million children are at home thus causing huge impact on the escalating cases of early marriages.
Godfrey adds that parents in Mwizi sub county have resorted to giving away their young girls between the age of 13-18 years to men in exchange of money and other things.
“Escalation of early marriages is due to lack of reproductive health information by many children, parents and guardians.” He noted.
The chairperson added that besides some groups of people like the clergy who oppose family planning methods, this has paved a way for unwanted pregnancies in the district and Uganda as a whole.
In the previous lockdown, Mbarara registered 1,200 cases of early pregnancy as a result of early marriages.
