In Masindi—
The President of Republic of Uganda HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni banned the operation of bars for 42days, despite the ban, bars owners are flouting the presidential guideline as a number of bars are seen operating.
This was revealed this afternoon at the weekly covid 19 taskforce meeting at the Resident District Commissioner’s office. The security department pointed out the hot spot areas including Kijura trading centre, Kirasa, Kijungu, Kabarwana amongst others.
SP Edinah Nyerereza the Officer in Charge Masindi CPS said that the above hot spot areas are deadly mostly Kijura trading centre where she pointed out that drunkards pellet stones to the security personnel who enforce corona virus guidelines.
Ronald Kyomuhendo the Mayor Masindi Municipality noted that in Kirasa, they have a challenge of soldiers who come from the Masindi barracks to take alcohol at the bars in the area. The political leader said that the soldiers are armed thus risking their lives.
“At around 6 or 7pm, soldiers flock from Masindi barracks to Kirasa, some of them are armed. It’s very hard to identified the bar owners, others are owned by the officers, we should first address this challenge otherwise we may end up loosing precious souls.” Kyomuhendo noted.
Amon Kagina the commandant military police Masindi barracks said that they are waiting for the permission letter from SP Edinah Nyerereza the Officer in Charge Masindi CPS to take actions. Kagina also noted that they will work in hand with police to deal with the bar owners flouting presidential guidelines, and soldiers who flock to Kirasa to take alcohol.
Rose Kirabira the Resident District Commissioner – RDC Masindi warned bar owners and said that those who will be caught operating illegally will be closed and licence canceled. “Bars are becoming a problem mostly in the above mentioned areas.” She noted.
Kirabira has however warned people who are acting as stumbling block when government is enforcing the guidelines, she notes that such people will be taken to courts of law. The President’s representative closed the bars with immediate effect and urged drinkers to purchase alcohol from either depots or factories, but not bars.
