in Masindi—
Today, drama ensued at Masindi high court premises as Masindi chief
magistrate was beaten during court proceeding.
Masindi Chief Magistrate, Catherine Agwero, was beaten by Fred
Kyogonza a resident of Kijura cell, central division Masindi
municipality in Masindi district today at around 10:00am.
The scuffle which lasted for more than five minutes started when chief
magistrate Agwero made a ruling against Kyogonza Fred
indicating that he should pay 4.8 million or be imprisoned for six
months.
All these came after Kyogonza Fred failed to pay 4.8 million to Magadu
James which a raised from the application he lost sometime back.
In 2013, Kyogonza Fred, filed an application against James
Magadua a tycoon in Masindi town but lost it and he was told to pay
4.8 million as court costs.
According to Gertrude Nabirye, the lawyer who was representing James
Magadu said that Kyogonza had come to court for an application for
notice to show cause why he shouldn’t be sent to civil prison for
failure to pay 4.8 million shillings.
She adds that when Kyogonza came to court he had no reason to give
to court explaining that this forced the magistrate to send him to
civil prison noting that when the chief made her ruling Kyogonza
jumped over the dock and started hitting her on the head.
The chief magistrate was rescued by the prison warders and the people
who had turned up for court.
The acting District Police Commander Masindi, Edwin Atukunda,
confirmed the arrest of Kyogonza and noted that they are going to
charge him with contempt of court and assault.
