The Masindi District Police Commander Shifa Kiribwa has warned leaders in Masindi district against settling rape and defilement cases in their areas out of court.
The police officer said the law is going to deal with whoever is caught conniving with defilement culprits.
The warning was sounded during the district leaders and members from the civil society organizations during a stakeholders meeting on sex and gender based violence organized by Forum for Women in Democracy {FOWADE} at Country Inn Hotel Masindi.
Kiribwa said that despite the various sensitization done by police, some leaders have gone ahead to promote defilement cases in their areas by collaborating with the perpetrators.
‘’We are currently looking for one area chairperson who recently took a bribe of 200,000 shillings and settled a defilement case which is against the law,’’ she said.
The Masindi district Probation and Gender Officer Annet Karamagi revealed that the district has registered over 1,264 gender based violence cases this year adding that her office has also registered 42 sex and gender based violence cases and 211 pregnant teenagers while 102 have given birth and 27 have reported back to schools.
Karamagi attributed the increased number of teenage pregnancy to the effects of Covid-19 which rendered most girls vulnerable and idle in homes.
The Masindi Municipality Member of Parliament Joab Businge attributed the increased cases of sexually gender based violence on people marrying for dependence instead of partnership and complementarity which is mostly promoted by women in society.
The politician also noted that most women have decided to accord a lot of love to their children instead of their husbands and even deny them their sexual rights whenever they get some misunderstanding which has created a lot of chaos in most homes.
Ms. Moreen Kyomuhendo the Program Officer FOWADE noted that the inadequate funding of police and the judicial sector by government has led to delayed justice to sex and gender based violence victims.
