Police in Masindi district are investigating circumstances under which a couple was discovered dead in the cassava plantation in Bisaju Village, Kasenene Parish, Nyantonzi Sub County, Bujenje Constituency.
The deceased have been only identified as Ivan, 25 years old, and her wife Justine, 23 years old, both residents of the same area.
According to Agaba Rogers, a resident, the couple was discovered dead yesterday evening in the nearby cassava plantation by Justine’s mother-in-law.
‘’The deceased man cut his wife on the head using a panga and poisoned himself, and a bottle of alcoholic drink suspected to have been used to mix the poison was found at the scene,’’ he said.
The Bisaju Village Vice Chairperson, Akugizibwe Patrick, told this publication that the couple developed a misunderstanding on Tuesday this week, and they suspect it to be the root cause of the incident.
‘’The couple has been having family misunderstandings for quite some time, and we suspect it to be the root cause of the incident,’’ he said.
Akugizibwe disclosed that the deceased wife had marks on the head, thus suspecting the man to have cut her before killing her instantly, adding that after the incident, the man poisoned himself to death.
The Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, Julius Allan Hakiza, confirmed the incident without divulging the details.
Hakiza attributed the incident to a family misunderstanding since the couple has been reportedly having fights in their marriage.
The regional police mouthpiece therefore asked the public to desist from such acts and always seek advice and help from relative authorities like the Child and Family Protection Unit (CFPU) rather than committing suicide or killing their partners.
