More than eighty residents from Kaborogota village Pakanyi sub county Buruli County in Masindi district on Monday stormed the office of Masindi Residence District Commissioner – RDC over being evicted from their land.
It’s alleged that the above affected residents encroached on the 1,747 acres of land belonging to the family of late John Isino Rwothnga.
Onenga Neston a victim explains they came to the RDC seeking for help after failing to be helped. He also said they are ready to vacate the land as along as they are well compensated, and given another land where they can settle.
Bosco Anyolo explains he has occupied the land for more than twenty years, the owner of the land invited his tribe mates to occupy the land to block land grabbers. Anyolo however explained that late John Isino Rwothnga didn’t give them any written document or agreement indicating the transfer of land.
He has therefore said he is ready to compensated, and be given another land where he can settle with his family. Sunday Orachi says the owner of want them to vacate but they don’t have were to go, he has appealed to government to intervene and help.
Denis Anwanglane the land care taker explained that the land belonged to their late father Mr. John Isino Rwothnga who acquired it in early 1972, and the squatters came as war victims in 1985.
Anwanglane also explained that they had a dialogue, and 251 residents accepted to be compensated, and each person was given 1½ acre of land, but others refused and rushed to the court but after court failed to grant them injunction they ran to the RDC.
“Since they run to court to seek for justice, they should wait for the outcomes. They came here after court failing to grant them injunction,” Anwanglane added.
Ms. Rose Kirabira the RDC Masindi appealed to the residents to have a dialogue, and solve the matter noting that most of them squatted on the land in different years, and they don’t have documents or land tittles indicating ownership.
