Vendors and customers at Masindi central market are worried about their lives and businesses because of uncollected stinking garbage.
Vendors mainly dealing in food stuffs told our reporter that the waste has remained uncollected for close to two weeks posing a danger to consumers, vendors and the surrounding community.
Mary Katusime, a fresh food vender in the market told our reporters that because of the refuse, buyers are now avoiding her stall because of its proximity to the stinking garbage skip. She wants the Masindi Municipal Council authorities to take away the rubbish.
Katusime also called on municipal council authorities to consider relocating the skip from the entrance of the main market arguing that nobody can construct a latrine in front of their house.
Musa Ssenyomo, another vendor who has a stall of second hand shoes said the garbage is spoiling the Muslim fasting period. He said their stomachs swell and gramble due to the stink arising from the garbage. He also fears that anytime, there could break out a dangerous disease in the market due to the filth.
Farouk Baguma, a butcher in the market said the garbage is affecting their business since flies from the skip dirt land on their meat. He said unless the municipal council authorities work on the matter, there could be a disease outbreak in the market.
When contacted, the Masindi Central Division Assistant Town Clerk Francis Atulinde acknowledged the problem. However, he refuted claims that the garbage has spent two weeks without being collected. Atulinde attributed the problem of uncollected refuse to the breakdown of the dumper. He said that the municipal authorities are working around the clock to ensure that the dumper is repaired. He promised that the garbage will be collected before the end of this week.
