Mbarara city and relatives of Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha are mourning her death following her passing this afternoon at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Mugisha, who served as the Vice President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), succumbed to complications from diabetes and high blood pressure. She had been on life support for nearly three weeks before being pronounced dead at 3 PM yesterday.
Family sources revealed that Mugisha had a long battle with these illnesses. Her brother, Elsi Muhumuza, shared that she was the eighth of ten children, born in Buhanama, now part of Ndeija sub-county.
Mugisha, described by her caretaker Mwebaze Dezi Njuna as a champion for women’s rights, leaves behind three children, all of whom are medical doctors. She was the widow of the late Dr. Israel Mugisha and is remembered as a strong advocate in civil society organizations.
Her contribution to the fight for democracy was acknowledged by Miria Matembe in her book The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Betrayed.
At the time of reporting, her body remained at the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem.
