Mbarara city authorities are targeting to benefit from a loan the Ugandan government is set to secure from the French Development Agency, to address climate change and urbanization with the aim of fostering economic growth in the city.
The funds are aimed at improving the status of four secondary cities namely Fort Portal, Arua, Mbarara, and Soroti as regards to climate change mitigation measures and promoting local economic growth.
In a June 30th, 2022 letter, the Lands, Housing, and Urban Development Ministry says that the government has secured a consortium of consultancy firms to support the elaboration of urban diagnoses, identification of priority investment projects, and conduct of feasibility studies across the selected cities.
According to Richard Mugisha the Deputy Mbarara City Clerk says the city has already earmarked four projects which include a city abattior ,a standard Recreation Centre at Kenkombe ,Roads (a mini bypass of Koranorya-Rwemigiina-Bishop Stuart Link) and Secondary Markets of Kakoba roundabout market, and Nyamityobora that will be essential in the development of Mbarara city.
Mugisha adds that they expect to get Euros 15 million which is approximately Ugx.60 billion from the French agency though he thinks it’s little to accomplish all these projects they have earmarked.
Speaking to this online publication Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi the Lord Mayor Mbarara city revealed that they are looking at a number of projects which will benefit the city dwellers off the program funding.
He adds they are considering constructing other Secondary Markets that include Kakoba roundabout market, Nyamityobora market among other projects which create trade order in the city .
Kakyebezi further says that the program which will be implemented in four years will commence after Mbarara city having approved all the projects they have earmarked.
