A dispute has emerged between Mbarara District Local Government and the office of the president over the ownership of a key government building located in Booma, Mbarara City, which houses several offices, including that of the Resident City Commissioner (RCC) and the Immigration Office.
During the handover ceremony of the RCC office to the newly appointed Catherine Kamwine, Lt. Col. James Mwesigye, the outgoing RCC of Mbarara, revealed that the district leadership has repeatedly demanded the land title for the property. Mwesigye said he had notified the Office of the President about the district’s claims.
The building, which Mwesigye says accommodates numerous offices such as the RCC, Regional Internal Security Office (ISO), District Internal Security Office (DISO), Regional Prisons Office, Citizenship and Immigration Office, Mbarara District Service Commission, and the UPDF 2nd Division Liaison Office, is currently claimed by the Office of the President.
Mwesigye, who is set to assume a new role as the Commissioner for Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) in the Western Region, handed over his responsibilities to Kamwine, urging continued cooperation between city leaders and the new RCC to ensure efficient service delivery.
Mbarara City Mayor, Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, praised Mwesigye for his efforts in fighting corruption in the city during his tenure as RCC. Kamwine, in her remarks, requested support from local leaders to help her fulfill her duties.
