Mbarara District Police Commander SP John Rutagira has expressed dissatisfaction with the way telecommunication companies handle the issue of SIM card registration.
He noted that SIM cards registered in other people’s names rather than their actual users have facilitated the continued cybercrime.
Rutagira made the remarks on Friday last week as the minister for ICT Judith Nabakooba met the members of the media from western Uganda in Mbarara city to discuss the role of media plus the relationship between the government and the media.
He pleaded with the minister that her ministry should provide tracking devices to every regional police station to help in tracking criminals that use SIM cards to commit crime.
Journalists on the other hand asked the ministry should give a guide them on who to host since the police and its sister security agencies always invade media houses that host opposition politicians.
The minister for ICT Judith Nabakooba promised that as the ministry they will engage telephone companies to switch off all SIM cards that are registered in other people’s names in order to eliminate cyber crime.
