Health workers in the Ankole Region under Uganda medical association have threatened to lay down tools over the repeated incidences of arrest, humiliation and harassment by security.
In a petition letter signed by the Uganda medical association president Ankole region Dr David Agaba Collins to the resident district commissioner who is also the chairperson of covid-19 task force Mbarara shows that on 25th April 2020 two doctors were arrested and held at the Mbarara police station as they drove to and from health facilities.
Letter went ahead and shows that on 10th June 2020 more than 20 health workers were arrested and indiscriminately detained throughout the night as they were moved to and from health facility.
Dr Agaba says that such acts have disrupted patients care and greatly demolished health workers who are already sacrificing a lot in the fight against this Corona virus pandemic.
He adds that such incidences are regrettable and must stop with immediate effect.
Dr. Agaba noted that however much they are mindful of the presidential directive regarding curfew time, the of work necessitates them to leave health facilities past curfew time and can be recalled late in the night.
However, Lt Col. James Mwesigye, the RDC Mbarara, denied allegations that Health workers were harassed in the last past operations.
Maj. Charles Kabona, the UPDF 2nd division spokesperson warned health workers not to carry other people in their cars.
