Over 700 residents of Kiswahili cell in Mbarara municipality are likely to face eviction by NEMA
This was revealed by Karugaba Hannington a resident of the same area while in an interview with www.mknewslink.com reporter today 16th March 2020 after a court session in Mbarara.
According to Hannington , NEMA officials last year visited their area and ordered people living a hundred metres from river Rwizi to immediately vacate the mentioned area.
However, people living near the river refused and filed a case at Mbarara high court.
The same court issued an injunction last year stopping NEMA officials from evicting people from their land such that people could first seek justice from court.
The high court judge his worship Gordon Tumuhimbise during today’s session instructed the lawyers of the residents to first seek legal advice from the court registrar as court prepares another date to issue its verdict on the matter
Meanwhile, the residents say that the land they live on currently is not a water catchment area of R. Rwizi thus they should be left to live on their land that was given to them by their ancestors or else get compensation from the government.
