In Mbarara—
Non teaching staff strike at Mbarara University has entered day two.
Over 250 non teaching staff at Mbarara University yesterday lied down their tools protesting the little money they are paid.
The staff who include the cleaners, security officers, office messengers and many others say that starting with this financial year of 2017 -2018, the ministry of public service increased the salary of all university staff but to their surprise salaries of teaching staff was increased to 110% and that of non teaching staff was on increased by 23% which they say is a mockery because they all do the same work.
According to the chairman of the non teaching staff and MUST engineer Charles Kakuru , their salary was enhanced by the president so if the university has failed to work upon their salaries now it’s high time they go to the president’s office because they earn a pea nut yet they have many problems to solve.
They said that the university got 960m to recruit more staff and that this money should be diverted to their salaries because no more staff was recruited
They say they are not going to work until their grievances are solved.
Professor Charles Kazooba who represented the Vice Chancellor who was in Kampala for the same issue assured them that they are going to hold a meeting today and by Thursday morning they will have got a response
