BULIISA:
Tororo Woman MP Hon. Sarah Opendi has warned the residents of Buliisa district against practicing open defecation if they are to fight cholera related diseases.
On the same note, she also asked the political leaders, technocrats in the district to ensure that the people of Buliisa construct toilets and make good use of them so that good hygiene in homesteads are maintained.
Opendi sounded this over the weekend after being told by the acting district health officer Buliisa Dr. Afeti that 35% of the population in Buliisa district still practice open defecation.
She said several diseases are being caused in homes due to poor sanitation and hygiene attributing it to lack of toilets as people turn their minds to defecating in bushes.
She asked the leaders to ensure that people construct toilets and make good use of them so that some diseases are prevented rather than being admitted to health facilities on some diseases that are easily controlled by the people at home.
‘’People should construct toilets and make good use of them so that some diseases are prevented rather than being admitted to health facilities on some diseases that are easily controlled by the people at home,’’ she said.
According to the health experts in the oil rich Buliisa district, open defecation increased due to floods that hit the area for close to two years and many toilets were submerged.
In 2019, Buliisa district was affected by increasing Lake Albert water which displaced more than 1,000 including some government institutions.
