The Chairperson of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, Dr Tanga Odoi, has announced chairperson of finance committee, Aringanyira Henry Musasizi as the winner of the Rubanda east County party primaries.
Dr Odoi said Friday that Musasizi garnered 22863 votes (50.3 percent) while his closest contender, Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema who had initially petitioned garnered 22,635votes (49.7 percent) after all the declaration forms were analysed.
The announcement comes days after a section of voters in Rubanda east constituency in Rubanda District protested the decision by Mr Odoi to delay the official declaration.
On September 26, about 200 protesters converged in Bubare subcounty in Rubanda district carrying placards, accusing the party of dishonesty.
The protesters blocked Kabale _Kisoro road with stones and burnt tyres, disrupting traffic before police dispersed them with bullets.
The ensuing chaos prompted the intervention of the NRM electoral commission headquarters in Kampala which culminated in the recount of votes.
On September 5th, according to the results that were announced by an official from national NRM Electoral Commission Gaudioza Kabondo and the Rubanda district NRM party Registrar Aggrey Monday, Musasizi was declared as the winner with 23,330 votes, defeating Biryabarema who garnered 22,412 votes.
Mr Biryaberema later petitioned Tanga for a recount.
On September 15, Dr. Tanga started the recounting of votes in Rubanda east, announcing at the end of first day of the exercise that Musasizi was leading Biryabarema by 228 votes.
