In Kampala—-
Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered the Head of the Anti-Corruption Unit, Lt Col Edith Nakalema to immediately arrest and apprehend two Rural Electrification Agency officials of over corruption.
The two officials are; John Turyagyenda and Godfrey Werikhe both top staff at Rural Electrification Agency.
The two are accused of soliciting bribes from investors whose companies had been awarded contracts to provide services to Rural Electrification Agency.
In a letter dated April 12, 2021, President Museveni lamented that despite his earlier warnings, the Minister of Energy went ahead to renew the contract of the two officials though a report had already been presented to him about their illegal dealings.
” I have directed the Head of the Anti-Corruption Unit at State House Lt Col Edith Nakalema to cooperate with the Director of CID to arrest and apprehend the two subjects for trial in the Anti-Corruption Court,”reads part of President Museveni’s letter addressed to Nakalema.
The President pointed out that the Inspector General of Government, Police Criminal Investigations and Internal Security Organisation had all made reports indicating that the two men should not have their contracts renewed.
When contacted, the Minister of Energy Mary Goretti Kitutu said that she did not know that the two men were blacklisted.
By Press-time, Lt Col Edith Nakalema was unreachable for a comment on this development.
