Mbarara University of Science and Technology has ordered for the closure of all the canteens in the University a development that has sparked off bitter reactions from the students and the Members of staff.
The closure of the canteens comes at the peak of misunderstandings between the University Staff Association and the top Management with the workers accusing the administration of being autocratic and deviating from the proper principles of management.
Julius Twijukye a student says that the trend of events at the University may lead to a tougher crisis.
He says that the administration did not consult the users of the closed canteens but are instead moving to create the dominance of the University Kitchen whose food prices are much higher and cannot be afforded by the students.
Julius Taremwa, the Mbarara University of Science and Technology Senior Administration Forum (MUSTASA) general secretary says that they have been reliably informed that the move is aimed at creating market for the University Kitchen, which has been taken over by the top administrators.
However, the University secretary Melchior Byaruhanga says that the decision was reached at in good faith and only aimed at creating order and ensuring that the students get quality services.
