NDA CONFISCATES OVER 700 BOXES OF FAKE DRUGS FROM SOUTH WESTERN UGANDA

National Drugs Authority (NDA) has impounded over 700 boxes of Counterfeit drugs both Human and Veterinary worth 252, 000,000 shillings in South Western region.
Addressing the press today at NDA South Western region offices in Mbarara city, Samuel Kyomakama the Head of Enforcement revealed that they have held enforcement operations from 14th – 25th of February ,2022 that targeted illegal drug outlets.
Kyomukama added that the operations were across 15 Districts in South Western which include Buhweju, Ibanda, Bushenyi, Isingiro, Kamwenge, Kasese, Kazo, Kiruhura, Kitagwenda, Lyantonde, Mbarara, Mitooma, Ntungamo, Rubirizi and Sheema.
He noted that the operation was in line with NDA routine post market surveillance activities ,intended to protect the Human and animal population from drugs and health care products that are substandard, counterfeit and unauthorized.
During the operation, a total of 742 outlets were inspected which include four pharmacies, 720 drug shops; 609 Human and 111 veterinary plus 18 clinics.
Kyomukama also revealed that of the 742 drug outlets inspected; 446 were licensed, 296 were issued with closure notices while 720 boxes of assorted drugs estimated at UGX.252.000.000 were impounded.
Since 2019 NDA has registered more than 110 criminal cases against operators. It has closed over 280 outlets.
Mbarara city Deputy Resident City Commissioner Christopher Aine commended National Drugs Authority (NDA) for their efforts in fighting unauthorized drugs from the Market.
He however encouraged NDA officials to truck perpetrators who invade the drug market with counterfeit drugs.
